| Nanalie had just arrived at school, her mode of transportation being the fancy motorcycle her mother never used. She was quite surprised her mom was fine with her taking it considering they hadn’t been getting along very well here lately. It seemed like they couldn’t stand to be in the same room with one another for more than five minutes before the arguments started. Some therapist probably would’ve just claimed it was because she was a teenager and this was just typical angst, but the reality of the situation was this had been set in motion some ten years ago when she’d watched her mom die in front of her, come back as barely a ghost, and then had to watch her father turn and walk out Alec’s office to go try and kill himself. That wasn’t the end though, because some fucktarded guardian angel decided to play God and fuck with her DNA without her consent. So yeah, she had plenty to be pissed off about. Sure, Destiny had given her a talking to, and that was probably the only reason she wasn’t some serial killer or some shit, but that shit still bothered her, and she hadn’t found a good outlet yet to handle her anger.
Sure, training to help out against the Templar’s was a help, but it just wasn’t enough. She didn’t know what it’d take to get this anger under control. For now she just had to deal with it. She'd definitely gone through some changes. White hair had been cut short, longer on top and shaved on the sides, and then dyed pink. She'd also got her ears pierced and her nose much to her mother's displeasure. She'd even gotten a few tattoos, including a gear tattoo on her neck. Her attire had changed up too, gone were the days of pretty dresses, instead she sported a black t-shirt, red leather half-sleeve jacket, bandages around her knuckles, wrists, and arms, black tight jeans, and combat boots.
”Oh, look who decided to show up! It’s the fucking freak.”
Nanalie hadn’t even made it out of the parking lot and onto the school campus and she already felt like she wanted to either hit something, or leave. Either option was enticing. ”Ignore them… just ignore it. Don’t rise…”, Nanalie changed to herself mentally, gritting her teeth in the process to keep from lashing out verbally. Instead of responding or going over to pick a fight like she really wanted to do, she just started walking up the sidewalk, counting the steps until she’d reach the school.
”What’s wrong, freak? Cat got your tongue? Come on, you scared? I heard you tried getting on the boxing team and the coach told you it wasn’t for pussy little girls.”
”Boxing team, eh? Her? Who wants to fight some weak little girl? Boxing’s for men, go play Barbie or something.”
Footsteps stopped as Nanalie found herself clenching her fists at her sides. She had really been trying to be the bigger person, but in the moment all she could imagine was punching the smug jerks in their faces. ”Why don’t you go play Barbie? I saw your last match, dude. You didn’t last thirty seconds. I could take you easily. I saw you bitching to your dad about the kid cheating when he didn’t.”, the words flew out of Nanalie’s mouth, zero care of the consequences.
Her words touched a nerve, because the kid who’d been calling her names got up from the wall he’d been sitting on, his own fists clenched just like Nanalie’s were. ”Yeah well, at least I got a dad, you fucking freak.”

| ”Yeah well, at least I got a dad, you fucking freak.” The word echoed around in her head like it was an empty chamber and with it her control slipped entirely on her anger and temper. Unaware she was even in motion until she was, she crossed the distance between herself and the kid who’d spoken at a run, fist clenched and arm cocked back. Stopping in front of the kid, legs spread and braced in a traditional fighting stance, she let her fist fly, connecting with the kid's mouth hard enough to split his lip and draw blood. This was only one of several punches however, as no sooner was her right hand connecting with the kid’s face did her left cock back, and fly. She punched the kid in the chest, before sending her right first into the underside of the kid’s chin in an uppercut. As she went to hit him again she became aware of arms wrapping around hers as she was restrained and dragged back. Having had tunnel vision up until that moment Nanalie became aware of the teacher’s who had seen the whole ordeal and rushed over to help. The kid who’d been running his mouth crumpled to the ground, back supported by the wall he’d been sitting on as well as the gym teacher who was kneeling down next to him and checking on him. ”Someone get the nurse!”, the teacher called out. Meanwhile, Nanalie found herself being dragged backwards further, towards the school building. Immediately she began to struggle and pull away. ”Get off me!”, Nanalie demanded, pulling free finally out of the sheer difference in strength between herself and the teacher who had been holding her. ”Nanalie, get inside and go to the principal's office, now!”, the gym teacher demanded of her as the nurse arrived. The gym teacher stood up, moving out of the way so the nurse could check the kid over who Nanalie had punched. The principal meanwhile arrived on the scene, walking out the front doors with his arms folded across his chest. ”Nanalie. Inside, now. Don’t make me tell you again. I think it’s time we call your mother.” Nanalie glanced towards the parking lot, at the motorcycle she had arrived on, thinking of just honestly ditching out and heading back home, or to the little hangout spot she’d made herself in one of the abandoned buildings in Edge, but before she could even move in that direction the principal spoke again, adding, ”Inside, and we call your mom, or take off and I call the police. Your choice Ms. Kane.””Fuck..”, Nanalie found herself muttering beneath her breath as she turned and headed towards the school. As she walked past the principal she felt his hand on her shoulder, but she shrugged it off roughly. ”Get off, I know where I’m going.” She really did too, this wasn’t her first trip to the principal's office after all, though normally it was because of her back talking teachers of mouthing off, this was the first time she’d put her hands on another student. Down the hall, and into the main office, Nanalie stepped around the receptionist desk before stepping foot into the principal's office. Flopping into one of the chairs meant for students, parents, or visitors, she slouched, elbows resting on the wooden arms of the chair as she found herself staring at the ceiling: her anger passed, now she was just annoyed. | |

| The principal followed Nanalie in, closing the door behind himself and shutting the two in together. Going over to his desk, the principal sat in the leather recliner. Rather than saying anything, he began to use his computer for a moment, brows furrowed as he searched for whatever it was he was looking for. Nanalie didn’t care, she just wanted this over as quickly as possible so she could go home. Since he wasn’t speaking, Nanalie wasn’t going to either. Instead she just continued to stare at the office ceiling, counting the drop ceiling tiles as time ticked away.
The principal finished up on the computer fairly quickly and glanced across his desk at Nanalie, who seemed more interested in the tiles of the ceiling than what was going on around her. He couldn’t help but to feel a bit bad for her, he knew she had had a rough few years, having inquired as to her absent father long ago when she’d been enrolled in school. She had always had some issues with both teachers and students alike, but regardless of that her grades had been decent. This was the first time it had come to a physical altercation, and he had a feeling that there had been some sort of trigger behind it. ”Nanalie, I want to help you. Talk to me, tell me what happened. You’ve had some issues here, but nothing like this. What brought this on?”, the principal inquired, showing actual, genuine concern upon his face. He was pretty sure that if it hadn’t been for the fact that he threatened to involve the police Nanalie would’ve taken off, and while he had truly had no interest in calling them if he didn’t have to, it had been enough of a threat to get her to come inside.
”Why does it matter, Mr. Zimmerman? I hit a kid, that means I’m at least suspended, if not expelled, right? Just call my mom, give me my walking papers, and let me leave.”, Nanalie would speak as she tilted her head back up, looking at the principal. She could see his concern, could even tell it was genuine, but she wasn’t about to spill her guts to him so easily: family business was just that, and it wasn’t for outsiders to know about. Besides, could he fix everything in the past, could he change how things had happened? No, he couldn’t. So what did it matter?
The principal sighed, having been hoping she’d open up a little more easily, but it seemed like that wasn’t going to be the case. ”Nanalie, it’s not that easy. Yes, I’m going to call your mom here in a few minutes, but I also have to check on Dillan and see what the nurse says before calling Dillan’s parents too. If they want to press charges for you assaulting their son there’s nothing I can do to stop that. That’s why I want your side of things. What did Dillan do to provoke you?”
Mr. Zimmerman obviously wasn’t going to let this drop, so Nanalie found herself sighing in defeat. ”He called me a freak when I got here. Then he and his buddy Zack decided to start teasing me because I wanted to get on the boxing team but the gym teacher told me no because it’s “for boys only”, and they told me to go play Barbie. So I brought up Zack’s last match, reminded him how he didn’t last more than thirty seconds, and how I’d heard him bitching to his dad after it, claiming the kid cheated. That’s when he said “At least I have a dad”, and I just saw red.” She didn’t know how this was going to help her any, the fact behind it all was that she had swung first, and been the only one to swing. Dillan hadn’t even had a chance to react. If he had hit her first then she could’ve claimed self defense, but that wasn’t the case, and there was no point trying to lie and say it was. First of all, that wasn’t her style, and secondly she knew the school had cameras everywhere so it would be simple enough to check and prove her story wrong.
”I’ll be right back, stay here.” Mr. Zimmerman spoke before rising from his chair and leaving his office, shutting the door behind himself as he went.

| Nanalie didn’t know why he bothered telling her to stay where she was, it wasn’t like she could leave. He’d already threatened to call the police on her if she had bailed a few minutes ago, and now she seemed to be facing the same sort’ve punishment. She wasn’t quite sure how her mom was going to handle all of this. She was always busy with Zero Sum, and while she did try and make time for Nanalie it just always seemed to end in some kind of argument here lately. Regardless, Nanalie returned to staring at the ceiling tiles because it was either that or watch the seconds tick by on the clock.
She must’ve waited about five minutes before the principal came back in, closing the door behind himself and returning to his seat behind the desk. ”Alright, so here’s the deal, Nanalie. Dillan has a busted lip but that’s about the extent of it. He’ll have a few bruises - on his chest and on his chin - but other than that there’s no serious harm done. He at least won’t need medical attention, at least in the nurse’s opinion. I’ve already called Dillian’s parents and they’re on their way to the school, so I’m going to call your mom now. Once everyone is here, and we’ve sat and had a little chat, we’ll go from there on deciding what’s going to happen next. Alright?” Mr. Zimmerman spoke, wanting to keep Nanalie updated. Sure, she was likely in some kind of trouble, but there was no point in keeping her in any suspense over it. He wasn’t an asshole like most in his position: in fact, the only reason he was even principal to begin with after winning the lottery about five years ago was because he truly loved his job and truly cared about his students: anyone else in his position probably would’ve bailed with a big middle finger to the school.
”Yeah, sure. Go for it.”, Nanalie responded, having lifted her head to look at the principal when he came back into the room. She watched as he picked up the phone and dialed her mom’s number.
”Hello, Demitria Kane speaking.”, Nanalie could hear her mother answer, the principal putting the call on speakerphone as soon as Demi picked up. In the background she could hear music, followed by a door closing and then silence, causing Nanalie to assume her mother had entered into her club office.
”Hello Miss Kane, this is Mr. Zimmerman, the principal at your daughter’s school. There’s been an incident with another student, but Nanalie is alright, regardless I need you to come to the school as soon as you can.”, Mr. Zimmerman explained in a calm tone of voice.
”Can Nanalie hear me?”
”Yes ma’am, she can. You’re on speakerphone.”
”Nanalie, what happened?” The sound of keys being grabbed and some shuffling could be heard over the phone as Demi asked, indicating she was getting ready to bail and head to the school or so Nanalie assumed.
”Dillan pushed my buttons, so I punched him in the face.”, Nanalie explained, trying hard not to sound like a smartass, but knowing she was going to fail.
”Nanalie, pick up the phone and actually talk to me, one on one.”, Demi requested, the sound of a door being shut in the background, followed by the recognizable sound of boots on metal stairs.
The principal picked up the receiver, taking it off the speakerphone, before handing the phone to Nanalie. ”I’m here, mom.”
”Tell me what happened, please. I need to know how bad it is. I know we’ve had our issues, but you’re still my daughter and I still love you and will do anything to protect you. So I need to know what I’m about to have to handle.”, Demi’s words were pleading, and the sound almost brought a tear to Nanalie’s eye. Gods, things had really been bad between them, but her mom was still there for her even if she was at fault.
Sighing, Nanalie pushed back the tears and responded, ”I got to school and the kid started calling me a freak along with his friend. I tried ignoring them and just wanted to get to class but they wouldn’t let it go. They started on how I had tried to apply for the boxing team here at school, but got denied because I’m a girl. Told me to go play Barbie. So I pointed out how Dillan, who's already on the boxing team, hadn’t made it thirty seconds in his round against this other kid, and how I caught him complaining to his father, claiming that the kid must’ve cheated. So I told him maybe he should go play Barbie instead. That’s when Dillan told me “at least I have a dad”, and I just saw red.”

| Demi sighed on the other end of the phone, and pretty soon Nanalie could hear an engine starting - it made sense her mother was going to drive here to keep up appearances. She couldn’t, after all, just fly on over in less than two seconds and have a ready made excuse anyone would believe. Nanalie remained quiet, and she could just imagine her mother likely pinching the bridge of her nose, possibly mouthing some kind of curse word or something. ”Mom?”, Nanalie would question after a good thirty seconds of nothing but ambient background noise.
”Sorry, hun, I’m here. I just really wish there was a way I could make that whole situation easier on you. I’m on my way now. Did he put his hands on you at all? How bad is this kid? I mean, I know you’ve got the Kane temper, but I’ve never seen you lose control on a hu-- normal person, so I’m guessing you had held back even though you were angry.”
”I busted his lip, and he’ll have a bruised chin and face, but that’s it. From what Mr. Zimmerman told me when he talked to the nurse Dillan won’t require any actual medical attention. I’m fine. He didn’t land a hit on me, actually, he didn’t get a chance to try hitting me back at all.”
”And this kid is on the boxing team? Yet they won’t let you because you’re a girl - another issue I plan on resolving while I’m there by the way.” Nanalie forced back her smile, even in this situation Demi didn’t hold back, she said whatever it was she wanted to say and that was that. Her mom also had the same way of thinking as she did. In the background she could hear the engine of her mother’s sports car revving, and knew she was on the highway and getting close.
”Yeah, pretty much. You’re almost here, right?”
”Yup. Listen, I don’t want to tie up your principal’s phone, but I need you to heed my advice for your own safety before I hop off: do not talk to anyone or say anything else until I get there. Not to Mr. Zimmerman, not to Dillan, or his parents, or anyone. Even if they try getting a rise out of you. I know you’ve got the same temper as the rest of us, but I need you to do this for me, alright?”, Demi would plead, hoping her daughter would listen to her and actually take her advice to heart.
”My lips are sealed, mom. I’ll see you when you get here.” With that, Nanalie passed the phone back to Mr. Zimmerman who after making sure the line was dead, hung it up. ”So I’mma just make like a statue till my mom gets here, she doesn’t think it’s a good idea I talk to anyone until she’s here with me.”
"I think that's honestly a good idea, Nanalie." Mr. Zimmerman would agree, leaning back in his chair as they waited. Dillan's folks worked close by, so chances were they'd show up soon enough too. The receptionist knew to send everyone his way when they arrived.

| Demi made good time getting to the school, then again, breaking speed limits had been a thing. Not that anyone had tried to stop her. Extra heightened perception meant she could see a cop long before they could see her, and her reflexes were on point, so there was little risk that she would cause an accident. After parking her car she sat there for a second, grabbing up her cellphone and sending a quick text to Jr, ”Yo, I’m at Nanalie’s school. She’s alright, but she beat up a kid for fucking with her over not having a father. I dunno how this kid’s parents are going to react or if they’ll want to press charges. I’ll keep you updated and let you know if I need some extra help.” Demi wasn’t going to let her daughter spend a second in jail, so if this was going to go down badly, well… It was always good to keep Jr. in the loop. She hadn’t really been active in anything lately, choosing to just stay out of it unless it was dire - she’d died, come back as a ghost, finally got her body back, been fucked with along with her kids. She’d earned a semi-retirement, but family was still family, so she’d step in if needed.
Stepping out of her car she closed the door behind herself and locked it with the keyfob before slipping it into her pocket. She ignored the stares her leather clad appearance caused and instead found what she was looking for - the motorcycle she had let her daughter borrow. She could pretty much get a gist of where the fight took place as there were still a few droplets of blood drying on the sidewalk.
Stepping towards the door she found another couple already about to walk in, the obvious husband of the woman giving Demi a once over and holding the door open for her. ”Thanks.”, Demi would respond to the man, almost rolling her eyes as he smiled at her in a flirtatious kind of way. She followed them in and then down the hallway to the main office, letting them go first when it came to speaking to the receptionist.
“Yes, I’m here about my son, Dillan. Some hoodlum beat him up and the principal called us in. I want to see my baby.”
Demi really did roll her eyes this time, though thankfully Dillan’s folks back was to her so they didn’t see it. The receptionist spoke in response, “Ah yes. Please go into the principal’s office, he’s expecting you. I’ll call over to the nurse and have Dillan escorted to the office in just a moment.” The woman and man turned and walked in that direction, leaving Demi now standing in front of the receptionist. ”I guess I’ll just follow them, since I’m the hoodlum’s mother.”, Demi would speak, the word hoodlum coming out as sarcastically as possible, her voice loud enough to carry as she intended. Just because she had told her daughter to behave didn’t mean she was going to. As she expected both the man and woman stopped midway through opening the principal's office door and glared at her. Demi simply walked over, shifting around them, and walking in first. The first thing she saw was her daughter seated in a chair, and she went to go stand behind her, before her gaze shifted to Mr. Zimmerman.
Dillan’s parents walked in as well, and Dillan immediately came in afterward, the nurse poking her head in for a brief second to nod to the principal before the woman left, closing the door behind herself. Dillan’s mom immediately began fussing all over him, while Dillan’s father seemed to appraise the condition of his son before glancing towards Nanalie with an eyebrow raised, as if trying to put two and two together as to how a female had put his son in such a condition.

| It seemed like everyone arrived all at once, her mother who came to stand behind her, and then Dillan’s parents before the nurse brought Dillan in. The kid’s face was already showing signs of bruising, and while she couldn’t see through his shirt she was sure his chest likely was too. Nanalie remained where she was, continuing to stay silent, but wanting nothing more than to make a snide comment about the way Dillan’s mom was fussing over him. Even as she glanced over to watch she caught Dillan’s father looking between the two of them, as if trying to see how a female could do such damage - she held back her grin, not wanting to make the situation worse.
”I’m sorry we’re all meeting under these circumstances. Dillan, if you could, I would like you to give us your side of the story, son.”, Mr. Zimmerman spoke, looking towards Dillan and causing the majority of the attention in the room to focus on the other kid.
“What side do you need? He’s covered in bruises and she’s not, she should be caged!” Dillan’s mom wailed.
”Please ma’am, I’d like his side from him.”
Unlike Nanalie who’d been completely honest about what happened, Dillan felt the need to put on a show and change things up a bit. ”It’s okay mom, I can do this. I was hanging with Zack by the wall, waiting for the bell to ring. Nanalie showed up and we said hello to her. She just went crazy, and ended up attacking me for no reason. You can ask Zack, he’ll tell you the same thing!” Dillan claimed, causing Nanalie to want to jump out of her chair and start beating on him again.
”Are you sure that’s the truth, son?”
“What do you mean by asking him if that’s the truth?! Are you calling my son a liar?” This time it was Dillan’s father who spoke up, the man’s hands clenched into fists as he rounded on the principal. Nanalie was pretty sure the only thing stopping Dillan’s dad from attacking him was the desk in his way and the fact that there were way too many witnesses in the tiny office space.
”No sir, I am not. I am simply asking for confirmation that that is what he believed to have happened. As you all are aware from when you signed your children up for this school, there are surveillance cameras all throughout the property - outside and inside. Even here in my office there are cameras. What’s more is they all record audio as well; both for the protection of the students as well as the teachers and other facility members. I have pulled the recording and wish to play it for all of you so that we can see it and hear it word for word.” Mr. Zimmerman was entirely calm during his explanation despite the angered response from Dillan’s father. Nanalie could also pick up the underlying threat behind his explanation of the video and audio recording as well - if Dillan’s dad attacked him there would be more than just a few witnesses.
“Well then play the video! We’ll see exactly what happened and how that monster attacked my little boy!”, Dillan’s mother exclaimed, obviously having fallen for her son’s version of events.
”As you wish.” Mr. Zimmerman spoke as he turned his monitor so that it would be within view of everyone within the room. He already had the recording pulled up, and after adjusting the sound of his computer speakers he proceeded to hit the play button. On screen the entire event played out. As mentioned, the entire conversation could be heard word for word. To Nanalie’s credit she had spoken the truth about the event, but Dillan was being proven to be a liar.

| Shortly upon entering the office and getting the gist of the general vibe of the room Demi found herself placing her hand gently on Nanalie’s shoulder. This was both to remind her daughter to remain calm and quiet, but also for herself as well. Dillan’s mother was fussing over him, and treating him like he was God’s greatest creation. Demi understood wanting to believe your children, and wanting to protect him, but this was going a bit too far. She remained silent just as Nanalie had throughout the entire thing, but every bit of information was saved to memory for use later on.
Dillan came up with a story far different than that Nanalie had told, and she could easily tell he was lying and embellishing it, making it seem like Nanalie was some sort of monster who just went around attacking people unjustly. She knew the forms she had to sign when she enrolled Nanalie into school mentioned that the school monitored all activity on property both with video recording as well as audio, so she’d been just about to mention the principal pulling up the tape when he did that himself. Dillan’s mother seemed to agree, but a quick side glance at Dillan showed the teenage boy beginning to pale, something his own father noticed too from the way his face formed into a frown.
When the principal turned the screen around Demi’s focus turned to it as well as everyone else in the room, watching and listening to the exact conversation that had occurred, as well as her daughter attacking the boy. She had got three hits on him, the first to the mouth, then to the chest, and then an uppercut to the chin. The boy had ended up on the ground and her daughter restrained to keep her from hitting Dillan again by another teacher. The video cut out after it showed Dillan receiving medical attention from the nurse, and Nanalie being taken inside, followed shortly by Dillan.
Demi was about to open her mouth and say something when Dillan’s father beat her to it. “So that’s how you go around talking to classmates, let alone women, son? I’m ashamed of you. Would you talk to your mother like that?”
”N-no sir.” Dillan responded, suddenly weary. His mother had stopped fussing over him, and in fact was standing there looking quite shocked. Dillan’s father meanwhile looked highly disappointed.
“On top of that you lied to us about what happened. You can’t go around talking to people like that, not with my political background, imagine what people would say if they knew my son went around talking to people like that.”
”I’m sorry, sir.” Dillan hung his head in shame.
Dillan’s father meanwhile focused his attention onto Nanalie and Demi, giving them another once over before looking to the principal. “Regardless of my son lying, and being verbally abusive, that is no excuse for anyone to have put their hands on him. Especially seeing as if he would’ve had a chance to fight back he would be in trouble for hitting a girl. Now I know the nurse said my son isn’t severely injured, and doesn’t require a trip to the hospital, but I’d like to know what’s going to be done about this. I’ve half a mind to call the police and get them involved, because that is assault.”
Demi looked towards Dillan’s father and then to Mr. Zimmerman, her mind going a mile a minute on how to resolve this in a way that wouldn’t involve the authorities. She would willingly hide her daughter away, disappear herself if needed, but she was hoping it wouldn’t get to that point. ”I do not condone my daughter’s actions, but I don’t think anyone wants this situation going public and it will happen should the authorities get involved. So my solution is this: allow me to remove my daughter from school and homeschool her. She’ll be grounded, severely, until graduation. This way she’ll no longer pose any sort of threat to Dillan here nor anyone else.”
